On Sunday March 24, the protests got violent. After a demonstration against gay marriage and artificial insemination near the famous Arc de Triomphe, some protesters spilled over onto the Champs Elysees, where they had been told they were banned from protesting. Hundreds of people gathered near the President’s home, chanting waving flags both of France and of their movement. When the police tried to have them move out of the street and away from the crowded boulevard, the people broke out into their national anthem, and some of the more impassioned tried to push back. The song wasn’t finished by the time everyone in the area could see and feel the clouds of tear gas rising from the crowd.

Police were expecting the protest to be made up of about 300 thousand people, but according to organizer’s estimates, the crowds swelled to well over a million people. Many of them were Parisians, but thousands of people bused into the capitol city just for this demonstration.

But why has this issue gotten this contentious? How has the issue of gay marriage, artificial insemination and adoption reached this level of passion? Many have come to see the issue of gay marriage and child adoption by same-sex families as a symbol for other complaints they have about the government, especially President Francois Hollande. As he moves the gay marriage bill through the senate, those against the new proposed law allowing gays equal marriage and child adoption are making a last minute effort to stop it.

“We’re trying to protect the family,” said one protester, a woman in her late 50s who was wearing a sweatshirt with the logo of the anti-gay marriage movement. The logo is a silhouette of a man and a woman with two children holding hands with the words “La Manif Pour Tous” which is literally translated into English as “the demo for all.” This image was seen all over Paris during the demonstration, most commonly on blue and pink flags, but also on clothing, posters, and stickers.

With this logo and spirit, the conservative effort aims to stop the bill from becoming a law with the support of not just the left or the right, or under one politician; a conscious decision by leaders of the movement that helps to give the protest more traction and include more sympathizers.

The crowd represented almost every age group in the French population. Just in the area where the tear gas was let off, there were elderly people, young families with babies, students, and middle aged professionals. A teenager with a shaved mohawk handed off a bullhorn to an older man with a white mustache and pre-school age children waved the blue and pink flags along with everyone else.
